When famed Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba was touring the world in the early 1900s, there was one jewellery label she wore above all others: Cartier. It was the beginning of an enduring relationship between Australia and the renowned French jewellery maison, which this week was taken to new heights with the launch of Cartier's new Sydney flagship store.
It was a night for the ages. Some 600 guests descended on the new boutique, which in and of itself is a love letter to the Parisian-Antipodean relationship. "Located in the heart of the city, this is a significant moment that represents the rich history and spirit of the Maison merged with the cultural fabric of Australia," Cartier Oceania Managing Director Alban du Mesnil said.

"What's so beautiful about the brand is it makes you feel so special and unique," actress Sophie Wilde told ELLE Australia on the red carpet, styling her Valentino look with Cartier's Stria earings, Chipui earrings, and Plaisance necklace.

For actres Nakkiah Lui, it was all letting the Maison's famous Panthere iconography shine. "My aim for the night is — the jewellery is so strong and powerful, I need to be as strong and powerful in it to do it justice," she told ELLE, pairing a black Common Hours robe with Cartier's Indomptables necklace, Indomptables bracelet, and Panthere Articulee ring. "I wanted to wear something that felt really strong. And I think this, an Australian designer with organic material, felt fitting."

After taking in the new boutique and high jewellery collection — the most significant collection Cartier has ever brought to Australia — guests were transferred to the Hyde Park Barracks, greeted by a red carpet and the Maison's signature bellboys.
The celebration started wiht a unique peformance from the Sydney Dance Company, choreagraphed by friend of the Maison Rafael Bonachela. But more surprises were in store, with global superstar Labrinth performing in his only Australian show.
