'Princess Diaries 3' Is Finally Happening & We Need Anne Hathaway On Board

Mhmm… mhmm… mhmm… The Queen is coming.

This is not a drill: a third Princess Diaries movie is in the works, and there's a small chance Anne Hathaway could return.
A script for Princess Diaries 3 is being penned by Aadrita Mukerji, with the producer on the first two films, Debra Martin Chase, returning for this third one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this third film is not a reboot, but a continuation of the first two films, which saw Anne Hathaway's Mia — a.k.a. Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi — first discover she was a princess, and then ascend to the throne as Queen of Genovia.
Miracles really do happen. It looks like we're heading back to Genovia, people. Here's everything we know.

Is Anne Hathaway returning?

We don't know this yet, but Anne Hathaway has expressed support for the reboot.
"There is a script for the third movie.... There is a script," she told Watch What Happens Live in 2019. "I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It's just we don't want to unless it's perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It's as important to us as it is to you, and we don't want to deliver anything until it's ready, but we're working on it, so..."
It's not clear if the script is the same script Mukerji is writing, or a new one. But if Disney is throwing its support behind the film now... well, it's sounding good. Good enough to tempt Hathaway back? God, we can only hope.
(Side note: can you imagine the Anne Hathaway fashion moments we'd be witness to if she joins Princess Diaries 3? Who do we have to bribe to make this happen.)

Is Julie Andrews returning?

Julie Andrews (Queen Clarisse Renaldi) has also expressed her support for a third film.
"I heard that there might be one," she said in 2020, when asked if there was a script.
"It's long been talked about but nothing sort of been on my desk or anything like that. I think I would [do it]. I'm getting awfully old and crotchety. I'm not sure if it's the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again, and sure I'd be up for it. I think we should wait for — if a script comes in, let's wait for that. Of course, we wouldn't have the wonderful Garry Marshall who was the director. He's passed. And he was really the nuts and bolts of it all."
Marshall, who directed both Princess Diaries (2001) and Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), died in 2016 at the age of 81.
However, in 2022, Andrews expressed that she feels "too old" to participate in the third film.
"I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
"But I don't think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [For] especially me, it's too far down the line now to go back to it. It's a lovely thought, but I don't think it would probably be possible."
"We give you... a princess." Disney

Is Chris Pine Returning?

Before he was being spat on by Harry Styles, Chris Pine made his film debut as Mia's love interest Lord Nicholas Devereaux in Princess Diaries 2.
"Chris Pine, a wonderful actor, also might appear in Princess Diaries [3] if we do it," Marshall said in 2016. A lot as changed since then, but we can only hope.
Sir. SIR.

When Will Princess Diaries 3 Be Released?

It is far, far too early to be asking this question. Late 2024, maybe? All we have is that a film is in the works at Disney and a producer is back on board.
We have no doubt that after so long, there will be a third Princess Diaries film — but as for who's coming back and the oh-so-crucial release date, we'll have to wait and see.
